John Sullivan was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The oldest of four siblings, John’s parents, Daniel and Mag Sullivan taught their son the importance of faith and family. A fourth generation Oklahoman, John Sullivan graduated from Northeastern State University and chose to live and work in Tulsa, where he is raising his four children today.
Sullivan’s approach to public office is rooted in his family’s appreciation for service to others. John’s entire family has a long and abiding history of volunteerism, serving such organizations as Tulsa’s Catholic Charities, Bishop Kelley High School, among others. John Sullivan’s small business experience in the fields of energy, transportation, real estate and investments provides Congressman Sullivan with a unique understanding of some of the major legislative issues facing the First District.
Given his seven years experience in the Oklahoma’s House of Representatives, Congressman Sullivan fully understands how the political process works. During his time in Congress, Sullivan has already been appointed an Assistant Majority Whip and a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, one of the most powerful committees in Washington.
Since coming to Congress in early 2002, Congressman Sullivan has tackled key legislative and policy issues for Oklahoma. Immigration reform is among his top priorities. Sullivan is responsible for increasing the Oklahoma City field office for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency from a mere four field agents to their current twelve agents. Sullivan introduced legislation to expand their operation and open a field office in the Tulsa area.
Congressman Sullivan has long stated the need for a comprehensive national energy policy. He worked through his committee to ensure that our country does not rely on foreign sources of energy.
As a member of the Republican Study Committee, a fiscally-conservative group of House members, Sullivan has taken the lead to reduce the size of the federal government and control runaway spending.
Congressman Sullivan has repeatedly demonstrated the pioneering spirit of Oklahomans. In one such instance, Sullivan cast a dramatic tie-breaking vote to improve the Head Start program.
Congressman John Sullivan resides in Tulsa with his wife, the former Judy Beck and his four children: Tommy, Meredith, Sydney, and Daniel.
Congressman Sullivan is pleased to serve on the influential Energy and Commerce Committee. The oldest legislative standing committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, The Energy and Commerce Committee is responsible for legislative oversight relating to telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health, air quality and environmental health, the supply and delivery of energy, and interstate and foreign commerce in general.
Within the Energy and Commerce Committee, he serves on the Environment and Hazardous Materials, Telecommunications and the Internet and Energy and Air Quality Subcommittees.
