Andrew M. Wright is Counsel to the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mr. Wright began his legal career as Assistant Counsel to Vice President
Albert Gore, Jr. in the White House, where he served as an attorney on the
White House Investigations Team and sat on the White House Immigration and
Tort Reform Policy Working Groups. In 2001, Mr. Wright served as Counsel to
the Former Vice President, representing the Gore Transition Office in legal
matters related to winding up the affairs of the Vice Presidency. Prior to
joining the Subcommittee staff, Mr. Wright practiced civil litigation and
criminal defense law in the Washington, D.C. office of Skadden, Arps, Slate,
Meagher & Flom LLP in its government enforcement litigation section and in
the Morgantown, West Virginia office of Jackson Kelly PLLC in its white
collar crime and litigation groups. Mr. Wright is admitted to practice in
the state courts of West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
In federal practice, Mr. Wright is admitted to practice in the United States
Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, as well as the United States
District Courts for the District of Columbia, the Northern District of West
Virginia, and the Southern District of West Virginia. Mr. Wright served on
the adjunct faculty of the West Virginia University ("WVU") College of Law
from 2004 until 2006, where he taught courses in Presidential Powers and
Federal Criminal Law. He was named "Adjunct Professor of the Year" in 2005.
Prior to obtaining his law degree, Mr. Wright held a number of political
jobs, including stints in the White House Office of National Service, the
Office of Chief of Staff to the Vice President, Clinton/Gore 1996 Primary
Committee, Inc., Gore 2000 Primary Committee, Inc., the 1996 Oregon
Democratic Coordinated Campaign, the Office of Oregon State Senator Susan
Castillo, the Office of Oregon State Representative Barbara Ross, and Oregon
Governor John Kitzhaber's Teen Pregnancy Prevention Task Force. During his
career, he has traveled on diplomatic missions or official delegations to
Afghanistan, Bahrain, Botswana, Chad, England, Haiti, Ireland, Jordan,
Pakistan, Qatar, South Africa, and Spain.
Mr. Wright graduated magna cum laude from Washington & Lee University in
1995 with a B.A. in politics. He received his J.D. from the University of
Virginia School of Law in 2000, where he was elected President of the
Virginia Law Democrats and served on the editorial board of the *Journal of
Law & Politics*. Mr. Wright is a Harry S. Truman Scholar and a member of the
Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Sigma Alpha, and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies.
Mr. Wright grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. He lives in Washington, D.C. and
Morgantown, W.V. with his wife, Caprice Roberts, who just completed a term
as a Visiting Professor at Washington & Lee University School of Law and
regularly serves as a Professor at WVU College of Law.
